How to start your health and fitness journey

Updated: Jun 4, 2021

The key to be healthy and fit for life is in long term sustainable nutrition plan and suitable workout plan which fits well in to your lifestyle. Other key factors include adequate rest and recovery. Getting quality sleep at night and incidental rest as and when needed throughout the day is a crucial part of long term well-being.

“Most of the time problem is not the willingness of the person to transform; it is the wrong protocol they follow, be it training or nutrition plan.”

When a beginner decides to improve his/her health most of the individuals go for what is the easiest and fastest way to improve their condition, this is the first major mistake many of the people do when they start their journey on the path of health and fitness.

Understanding individual requirement and identifying what is most suitable for his/her condition is the key to succeed. Generally, people make decision based on what is available around them, what is most popular around them, what their friends are doing, what their favorite celebrity or idol is doing and what is recommended by family members.

Such a poor way of deciding how to start their journey without understanding the impact of their choice. When you see people constantly changing exercise routines, nutrition plans and fad diets, is nothing but the outcome of their casual approach.

“Nobody wishes to stop improving themselves, it is basic human aspiration and we all want to do more, most of us want to have good health and good fitness levels but due to wrong choices many of us fail to continue the journey.”

Not understanding the long term impact is another big mistake when it comes to deciding how to change yourself and how to make the new change part of your lifestyle and not something you do for a short period of time.

Having a complex plan which gives fantastic results but cannot be followed for a long time or too difficult to execute on a daily basis is also not useful because what’s the point of doing something you can’t sustain rest of your life. I have seen countless number of individuals get in to really good shape in short time and few years later they are back to where they have started. This kind of roller-coaster ride puts lot of unnecessary physical and mental pressure on person's overall health and well-being. Something that we all need to understand that it’s not about speed with which you transform. Nothing against doing it as fast as possible but it should be done only if you can sustain the speed for long time without putting excess pressure on your system and without compromising daily life. If yes, then do it as fast as you can.

Transformation has to be with optimum speed for maximum efficiency and to get that it is very important to know your individual requirement to customize your nutrition and training plan to set a sustainable process of change which you can follow and execute rest of your life.

Your success depends on getting a plan which takes into the consideration how you will be living rest of your life and, the sustainability and seamlessness of the modifications done to your current lifestyle. Consistency here is the key, without it transformation process will not be effective at all.

As a fitness coach I always push my clients to have sustainable long term solution which will take them to their natural peak potential of physical and mental health.

What should be the first step for a beginner to start improving health and fitness?

  • Assessing his/her current physical & mental condition

  • Identify abnormalities in internal system if any

  • Assess the severity of the pathology if any

  • Fix lifestyle habits which are in line with improving health and fitness

  • Fixing nutritional deficiencies to support normal functioning of internal systems

  • Introducing activity suitable for his/her current capacity considering long term sustainability

  • Focus on task specific fitness and sports nutritional requirement to achieve peak potential of physical and mental fitness

Good blog. Came across it in twitter...It's good to see you focus on solutions based on long term sustainability which is quite rare among coaches.
