Nutrition and Mental Health

Updated: May 19, 2021

It’s time we start looking at food with more respect and not just something to be used for losing fat and gaining muscle.

Correct nutrition plan will help you improve cognitive function, hormones production, vital organs function, over all energy, agility, strength, flexibility, internal balance, body composition and much more.

Nutrition and Mental Health

“Correct nutrition plan will help you improve cognitive function, hormones production, vital organs function, over all energy, agility, strength, flexibility, internal balance, body composition”

As a fitness coach, during my practice I have often seen people with not so bad body composition and sometimes even with really good body composition struggle with mental health issues. We need to understand it is possible to have a good external appearance for a while without having stable mental health. But this cannot be sustained in long term because lack of mental health catches up with time and disrupts overall health and well-being.

Food for Well-being

“In my practice, I have observed individuals with correct food habits had good mental and physical health.”

How food affects mental health?

All the neurotransmitters, hormones responsible for our feelings and emotional well being are chemical compounds produced in the body. Inability to produce certain chemical compound or hormone responsible for their production affects your brains ability to function optimally.

Think about it. Your brain is always “on.” It takes care of your thoughts and movements, your breathing and heartbeat, your senses — it works hard 24/7, even while you’re asleep. This means your brain requires a constant supply of fuel. That “fuel” comes from the food you eat — and what’s in that fuel makes all the difference. Simply put, what you eat directly affects the structure and function of your brain and, ultimately, your mood and behavior.

Like an expensive car, your brain functions best when it gets only premium fuel. Eating high-quality nutrient dense food that contain abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, essential fat like omega-3 and high quality protein nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress — the “waste” (free radicals) produced when the body uses oxygen, which can damage cells.

Unfortunately, just like an expensive car, your brain can be damaged if you ingest anything other than premium fuel.

It is very important to know what type of nutrition is needed for your optimal mental health which has influence on your physical health and over all well-being.
